Dash Cam: An Overview

2025-08-26

A dash cam is a device that records video, audio, and other relevant information during a vehicle's operation. After installation, it captures the entire process of the vehicle's travel—including video footage and audio—serving as evidence in the event of traffic accidents. For road trip enthusiasts, it also documents the experience of overcoming challenging terrains. As the vehicle moves, the dash cam records footage while embedding time, speed, and location data into the video, functioning much like a vehicle event data recorder (VEDR).

It can also double as a DV for recording daily life moments at home or as a household surveillance device. Additionally, most dash cams offer parking monitoring. Importantly, the recorded video data cannot be edited or trimmed; any modification will render it invalid for providing evidence in liability accidents. This feature also helps prevent "insurance fraud" (a common issue where individuals intentionally stage collisions to extort money from drivers).

Key Functions of Dash Cams

1. Protecting Drivers’ Legal Rights: For pedestrians jaywalking, or cyclists/motorcyclists weaving recklessly on the road, collisions with them may lead to extortion. A dash cam provides drivers with valid evidence to defend themselves.
2. Streamlining Accident Handling: Playback of recorded footage clarifies accident liability at a glance, enabling traffic police to resolve cases quickly and accurately. This allows for rapid scene clearance to restore traffic flow while preserving critical evidence, fostering a safer and smoother traffic environment.
3. Reducing Hit-and-Runs: If every vehicle is equipped with a dash cam, negligent drivers will be captured by other vehicles’ devices, significantly reducing the number of hit-and-run incidents.
4. Supporting Legal and Insurance Processes: Courts can make more accurate rulings and compensation decisions in road accident cases with dash cam evidence, while insurance companies also use this footage to process claims.
5. Aiding Crime Investigations: In cases of intentional fraud or highway robberies, dash cams provide crucial evidence—such as accident scenes and suspects’ physical features—to assist in solving crimes.
6. Documenting Road Trips: For road trip enthusiasts, dash cams record the journey of conquering difficult and dangerous routes.

Types of Dash Cams

Dash cams are mainly categorized into two types: portable dash cams and aftermarket in-dash DVD-integrated dash cams.

- Portable Dash Cams: Further divided into rearview mirror-mounted and standalone data-recording models. These offer advantages like discreet installation, easy setup, detachable design, low cost, and simple operation.
- Aftermarket In-Dash DVD-Integrated Dash Cams: Typically vehicle-specific, with both factory-installed (OEM) and aftermarket options. While they have higher installation costs and require more complex modifications, they maintain the interior’s aesthetic integrity. Some luxury vehicles come with pre-installed dash cams from the factory.

Tips for Choosing a Dash Cam

When selecting a dash cam, analyze key specifications, including field of view, video resolution, compression format, buffer memory, manual recording shutdown, emergency recording, and compatibility with other in-vehicle electronics.

- Field of View: Most dash cams have a field of view around 100 degrees, which generally covers both adjacent lanes. A slightly wider angle helps capture the full surroundings, but excessively wide angles may cause image distortion—avoid extreme wide-angle lenses.
- Video Resolution: 1280×720 (720p) typically ensures clear capture of the front license plate, though plates in adjacent lanes may appear blurrier. Additionally, the light sensitivity of the cam’s CMOS sensor and the quality of the external lens directly affect night-time recording performance.
- Compression Format: Most dash cams use the H.264 format. Poor compression not only consumes more storage space but also requires faster memory cards (to avoid frame drops and ensure compatibility). For drivers, choosing a reasonable recording interval (1 minute is recommended) helps with timely evidence collection after accidents.
- Buffer Memory: Larger buffer memory delivers smoother video playback and better memory card compatibility.
- Night-Time Performance: This refers to the device’s low-light capability. High-quality dash cams do not rely on LED or infrared lights—even bright supplementary lights are dimmer than vehicle headlights, failing to illuminate the road and instead causing reflections on the windshield that blur footage.
- Emergency Recording: Due to the loop-recording feature of dash cams, important footage may be overwritten by new recordings. Emergency recording solves this: pressing a button manually locks critical clips (preventing overwriting), while automatic emergency recording uses a gravity sensor to lock footage when severe vehicle vibrations (e.g., collisions) are detected.
- Interference Prevention: Low-quality "knockoff" dash cams skip shielding measures and lack strict testing, which can interfere with in-vehicle electronics (e.g., GPS navigation, remote controls, radios, tire pressure monitors, and on-board computers)—a critical issue in emergency situations.

Beyond the above, prioritize models with larger buffer memory. Basic features (e.g., automatic recording on ignition, automatic shutdown on engine off, and loop recording) are standard, but confirm their availability when purchasing.
